Statement by Dr Jim Browne on election of new President
Dr Jim Browne extended warmest congratulations to President-elect Michael D. Higgins, who has been associated with NUI Galway for almost 50 years.
On behalf of the entire University community, I am delighted to extend our warmest congratulations to Michael D. Higgins on his election to the highest office in our nation - the Presidency of Ireland.Michael D. has been associated with NUI Galway for almost 50 years, entering the University as a mature student in 1962; serving as President of the Student Council; and going on to become a highly regarded lecturer in Sociology & Politics for many years. He currently serves as Adjunct Professor at the University's Irish Centre for Human Rights.
On a personal note, I have known and respected Michael D. since I first came to NUI Galway as a student. All his life Michael D. has demonstrated a commitment to education in the very broadest sense - as a mature student, student representative, academic, author and holder of public office.
These roles all highlight his deeply-held belief in the importance of education and ideas. Generations of NUI Galway students will remember Michael D. as an inspirational teacher; I believe he will be an inspirational President. I extend best wishes to Michael D. and Sabina and every fulfilment in the years ahead.
NUI Galway takes pride in the success of our alumni, many of whom have distinguished themselves as leaders in various fields of endeavour in Ireland and around the world. As an alumnus of NUI Galway we are especially proud of Michael D. Higgins and his distinguished achievements, as he assumes the role of President.
The Office of President has been increasingly to the fore in national life in recent years. Michael D.'s talent and integrity, along with his commitment to service in public life, will ensure that he will be an inspirational and visionary President, following those who have held that office with great distinction and honour.
On behalf of the University, I congratulate him on the unique leadership role
