Lecturers’ teaching schedule criticised by TD

Fianna Fail TD Brendan Keneally said it is “extraordinary” that lecturers in Institutes of Technology teach for only 480 out of 560 contracted hours.

Mr Keneally marvelled that lecturers in IT's generally teach for only 16 hours per week and are paid extra for correcting papers "on top of the few hours they work".

But TUI general secretary Peter MacMenamin said lecturers' contracts listed 19 other duties in addition to teaching such as research, mentoring and assessing students. Sixteen hours' teaching was high by international standards, he added. (Source: Irish Independent)

Isn’t it extraordinary how Brendan Keneally TD can be so naive as to ‘marvel’ at and equate 16 hours teaching as the only work that lecturers do. It’s a sad indictment of the ‘work’ of Mr. Keneally that he could not research the full facts relating to the duties of our lecturers. Maybe he is projecting his own guilt with respect to his ‘working hours’ on the Dáil floor.
