Children challenged to grow their own

360,000 seeds and 60 tonnes of compost are landing on school doorsteps this month, with children invited to sow, grow and reap their own vegetables.

Minister of State for Food and Horticulture Trevor Sargent has challenged every primary school to enter the Incredible Edibles Competition and sow and grow potatoes, lettuces, cabbages, scallions and strawberries.

Schools must keep a diary to document the sowing and planting of the crops in February through to harvest in June and marks will be awarded for team work, crop management and presentation.

There will be over €10,000 in educational prizes for the 10 best growing diaries.

The competition is supported and funded by Agri Aware, the Irish fruit and vegetable industry, as well as various private firms.
