‘Buy a Miracle Tree’ campaign 2009

The ‘Buy a Miracle Tree’ campaign is designed to emphasise the vital importance of trees to the development of sustainable livelihoods for people of the Horn of Africa.

Vita poster Miracle Tree CampaignThe Moringa Tree (also known as the Miracle Tree because of its amazing properties) is one of the keys to ending hunger and malnutrition in many parts of the world affected by poverty, drought, disease and starvation.

Schools are invited to sign up for the 'Buy a Miracle Tree' campaign. Registered schools will receive a School Pack containing everything needed to run a successful campaign. They will encourage pupils to ask their families and friends to sponsor them at €1 per tree for a range of activities including:

  • Entering the colouring and collage competition,
  • Growing their own seeds,
  • Comparing the countries of Ethiopia, Eritrea and Ireland with fact cards supplied,
  • Learning facts about the Moringa Tree,
  • Other innovative educational and fundraising ideas included in the pack.

The trees bought will then be planted in Ethiopia and Eritrea. Prizes will be available for pupils, teachers and schools.

The Moringa tree, or Miracle Tree, is fast growing, drought tolerant and pest resistant and every single part of it can be used for fuel, food and medicine.

  • The leaves and flowers can be eaten raw or cooked and the seeds used to produce vegetable oil;
  • The winged seeds are used to purify dirty water;
  • The winged seeds can also be used to make soaps and creams;
  • Part of the bark can be used for rope making;
  • Wood from the tree can be used as fuel;
  • There is also a whole list of medicinal applications from stomach ache to fighting childhood blindness.
