Three new research centres established
Three new scientific research centres are to be established in Cork and Shannon, which will provide research support for companies located nearby.
An investment €5 million for the new research centres was announced last week by Minister of State Jimmy Devins.
Two of the units will be hosted by Cork Institute of Technology (CIT):
- The Medical Engineering Design and Innovation Centre;
- The Centre for Advanced Photonics and Process Analysis.
CIT has already initiated collaborative research with medical devices company Alcon, and photonics work with start-up company Epi-Light.
The Institutes of Technology in Tralee and Limerick will jointly host the third unit, the Shannon Applied Biotechnology Cluster.
This unit will seek to mine low-cost natural materials for possible use as medicinal products, food flavours and immune-system boosters.
