Innovative profiling tool launched at IT Blanchardstown
A new adult profiling tool looks at a person’s learning style and enables identification of specific areas of difficulty that the person may have.
The launch took place at the ‘Kaleidoscope of Learning Showcase 2008’ in the Institute of Technology Blanchardstown (ITB). The half-day showcase featured the many initiatives in learning styles, learner supports and technologies that are currently being undertaken by ITB and National Learning Network.
Speaking about the new profiling tool, Dawn Duffin of National Learning Network said it was estimated that up to 10 per cent of people have a specific learning difficulty but many have developed ways of managing their learning to overcome their difficulty.
”A further 10 per cent of the population, while not having a specific learning difficulty, may encounter trouble in some areas and could benefit from supports in education and employment,” Ms Duffin said.
“The tool looks at a person’s learning strengths and weaknesses and gives suggestions as to how the individual could best organise his or her learning in the future,”
The profiling tool was developed by Professor Amanda Kirby of the Dyscovery Centre in the University of Wales (Newport), who was guest speaker at the showcase event.
National Learning Network has the exclusive right to offer the screening tool under licence in Ireland. A number of educational institutions have already expressed an interest in the tool, including the City of Dublin VEC which is set to introduce it later this year.
