First national Irish language radio station launched

Raidio X, the first national Irish-language radio station aimed at young people, was launched today on the cricket field of Trinity College Dublin.

Launch of Raidio XA hundred young Irish speakers gathered to create a huge human X on the field and give the station an explosive launch. The event marked the first day of Seachtain na Gaeilge 2008.

Raidió X will broadcast throughout Ireland 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, via its website www.raidiox.com. It will target the 15-35 age group and is expected to add substantially to Irish language radio listenership. The station will also provide a platform for musicians who sing through Irish.

Raidio X is a temporary name for the station, and a national competition is underway to find the best name. Entry leaflets are being widely distributed throughout the country during Seachtain na Gaeilge and should be returned before the closing date of Monday, 17 March. Entries can also be sent in via email to raidio@cnag.ie. The winner will receive an iPod Nano.

Lisa Ní Choisdealbha, Chairperson of the Radio X working group, said:

"This is a historic day as we begin to broadcast the Irish language radio station Raidió X. This station has the greatest potential to advance the promotion and use of Irish amongst young people since the setting up of TG4. I am certain that we will see positive results in the near future."

The working group of Raidió X decided to broadcast firstly online with pre-recorded material. Live programmes will be developed during the summer and well-known faces along with young talented presenters will be attracted to the station gradually. Notable celebrities such as Hector Ó hEochagáin and Des Bishop have shown strong support for the new station.

Raidió X has engaged the services of Digital Audio Productions, a leading media company in digital entertainment, to provide technical and consultative support for the station.
