€14.3m for Irish language projects North and South
Foras na Gaeilge has announced funding of almost €14.3m for organisations, community groups and projects throughout the Island of Ireland.
Included in the announcement is core-funding for the main Irish language and educational bodies of almost €8.7 million. This figure represents an increase of over 7.3% on last year’s figure.
Also announced were the results of ‘Scéim Phobail Gaeilge 2008-2010’. This scheme will see €3.6m distributed to 17 local community groups throughout the island over the next three years.
The aim of the scheme is to support the employment of community-based language development officers who will work on the ground to promote the use of Irish.
Amongst the other funding decisions to be announced were:
- A contract worth over €1 million was awarded to Fiontar, DCU, for the continued development and maintenance of www.focal.ie, the National Terminology Database;
- Over €330,000 was awarded to Trinity College for the continued development of ‘Cabogaí’, text-to-speech synthesis software for Irish;
- In excess of €313,000 was awarded to the Irish language cultural centres ‘An Gaeláras’ in Derry and ‘Cultúrlann Mac Adam/Ó Fiaich’ in Belfast;
- Over €150,000 was awarded to N.U.I. Maynooth to develop the C2 level of ‘Teastas Eorpach sa Ghaeilge’;
- Over €90,000 was awarded to the N.C.C.A to part-fund the development of ‘MALL’ (Mobile Assisted Language Learning) tools.
Ferdie Mac an Fhailigh, Chief Executive of Foras na Gaeilge, said:
“We are delighted to announce funding of almost €14.3 million for projects, groups and organisations across the length and breath of the Island here today.
”I am particularly happy to be able to announce a 7.3% increase in funding for the main Irish language and educational organisations. I am also delighted to announce the results of ‘Scéim Phobail Gaeilge 2008 – 2010’.
The number of applications for this scheme highlights the progress that is being made at community level throughout the island and it is unfortunate that we are unable to support all applicants.
"This scheme will see 17 full time development officers working on the ground in communities to develop the use of Irish. We look forward to working closely with these officers and with all of the groups and organisations in the sector to achieve our collective aims and objectives.
"To the unsuccessful applicants, I would ask that they look to some of our other funding schemes such as ‘An Scéim Óige’ or ‘An Ghaeilge sa Phobail’ for assistance and hope that we can support their endeavours in some other way."
