Corkman elected as next USI president

A graduate of UCC has been elected as the new president of the Union of Students of Ireland

Richard Morrisroe, graduate of University College Cork, is to be the next president of the Union of Students of Ireland (USI). The 25-year-old psychologist is a native of Kilcanway, Co. Cork. Since graduating in 2005, Morrisroe has held the post of USI Education Officer, and is currently the president of UCC Students' Union. His one-year term in this office concludes this summer. On 1 July he will take over from incumbent USI president, Colm Hamrogue. 'USI is doing vital work to ensure that education issues are afforded due regard by all the political parties and candidates contesting the General Election. My job from July – regardless of whoever forms the next Government – will be to hold every elected politician to their election campaign promises,' Morrisroe said. 'This is a transitional time in the Higher Education sector as well as in politics. The proportion of young people entering third-level education has expanded, which augurs well for the future of our society. However, this expansion in student numbers presents challenges in terms of third-level investment and improving student financial supports. 'Marginalised sections of society continue to find themselves excluded from opportunities at college level. 'Among my priorities is seeing USI lobby for equality of access to education for every individual. Regardless of a person's social background, age, nationality or bank balance, education is a fundamental right," the incoming president said. Incumbent USI President Colm Hamrogue has led the Union since July 2006. He will fulfil the remainder of his one-year term by taking the Union through the critical General Election period
