Macbeth in Monaghan to be broadcast in January

The four part radio series, Macbeth in Monaghan, will be broadcast on RTÉ Radio 1 over four Sundays in January 2007

On Wednesday and Thursday, 5 and 6 December, an RTÉ production team based itself at St Louis Secondary School, Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan to record performances of Shakespeare's Macbeth. TV and theatre actor Alan Stanford was directing proceedings. Leaving Cert students from St Louis Secondary School, Patrician High School, Monaghan Collegiate School and St. Macartan's College in Monaghan town made up the cast of this demanding play. The four part radio series, Macbeth in Monaghan, will be broadcast on RTÉ Radio 1 over four Sundays in January 2007. After the success of Lear in Longford, produced last year by RTÉ Drama and also featuring Stanford, the actor said he was 'looking forward immensely to visiting Co Monaghan and to working with the pupils of the four schools'. 'Macbeth is the closest thing to an adventure movie that Shakespeare ever wrote. It's like a James Bond or a murder mystery where the action is non-stop. It is most exciting play to act in or to direct,' Stanford said. Also on the RTÉ team is Monaghan broadcaster and actor Sean Rocks. No stranger to the stage himself Sean says: 'It's great to be working in my home county and I look forward to these young Monaghan actors being broadcast on the national airwaves early next year.' As well as featuring the performances of the Monaghan pupils, the radio series will also provide exam guidance and revision tips from some of the country's top teachers. The series will also be available as a podcast and will be a very useful revision tool for pupils and teachers alike.
