Keep them interested with the occasional bit of humour

Humour can be anything that creates a positive feeling in students and makes them smile and laugh

Most educators agree that occasional, appropriate use of humour can increase student attention and maintain focus. Humour can be defined broadly as an event that elicits laughter. It is not limited to jokes or humorous stories but can include props, puns, short stories, anecdotes, riddles, or cartoons. It can be anything that creates a positive feeling in students and makes them smile and laugh. Humour captures their attention and is memorable. A point can be made effectively when made with humour, and at the same time a positive atmosphere can be maintained. For example, if a mobile phone rings in your class and you grab the phone and start chatting to the caller, your students will probably laugh but they will also probably be more careful to turn off their phones in future. With the technology available in schools and colleges today, humour can be introduced also by means of video clips, cartoons or music. These must of course be relevant to the topic being taught. They will make your students smile, but they will also educate them by reinforcing the lesson, or a point in the lesson, in a way that they will remember.
