Education programme for drug addicts wins award

Jewel and Esk Valley College in Edinburgh has been commended for its work in helping drug addicts back into education

Jewel and Esk Valley College in Edinburgh has received a commendation from its national body for its work in helping drug addicts back into education. Jackie Doody, head of the college's Creative Industry and Arts faculty, said: "We were delighted to win this award. We have found the key to success has been the design of a programme that makes use of the strengths and resources apparent in both partners. "A lot of work has gone into creating a partnership that is truly built on trust, and the strength of that partnership is the secret behind this programme's success." The Transition programme was launched in February 2004, and has since helped more than 380 students to improve their skills and employment prospects. Almost one in three went on to study at the college, and gained 216 SQA certificates between them, with 49 going into further education and 52 into jobs.
